Chancellor James Williams was an African-American sociologist, historian and writer. He is noted for his work on African civilizations prior to encounters with Europeans.

Professor Williams published over 50 articles, professional books, and lectures. Among his publications are The Raven, The Rebirth of African Civilization, and the greatest book, The Destruction of Black Civilization.

"I was convinced that what troubled me and what I wanted to know,

was what troubled the black masses and what they wanted to know . We

wanted to know the whole truth, good and bad . For it would be a continuing

degradation of the African people if we simply destroyed the

present system of racial lies embedded in world literature only to

replace it with glorified fiction based more on wishful thinking than on

the labors of historical research .

My inquiry, therefore, was concerned with Black Civilization alone what

the Blacks themselves achieved independently of either Europe or

Asia . This was an entirely new approach to the study of the history of

the Blacks . It meant, first of all, segregating traditional African institutions

from those later influenced by Islamic Asia and Christian Europe . In

this way, and in no other, we can determine what our heritage really was

and, instead of just talking about "identity," we shall know at last

precisely what purely African body of principles, value systems or

philosophy of life gradually evolved from our own forefathers over

countless ages, and we will be able to develop an African ideology to

guide us onward . In other words, there can be no real identity with our

heritage until we know what our heritage really is . It is all hidden in our

history, but we are ignorant of that history . We have been floating

alone, basking blissfully in the sunny heritage of other peoples!

My research was a quest for some specific answers to very, specific

questions . Some of these were : (1) How did all-black Egypt become allwhite

Egypt? (Note at this point that mulattoes were classified as white

in Egypt, all North Africa, and the Middle East-a fact that still confuses

Blacks in the United States where the very opposite policy was adopted .)

(2) What were some of the specific details in the process that so

completely blotted out the achievements of the African race from the

annals of history-just how could this he done on such a universal scale?

(3) How and under what circumstances did Africans, among the very

first people to invent writing, lose this art almost completely? (4) Is there

a single African race, one African people? (5) if we are one race or one

people, how do you explain the numerous languages, cultural varieties

and tribal groupings? (6) Since, as it seemed to me there is far more

disunity, self-hatred and mutual antagonisms among Blacks than any

other people, is there a historical explanation for this? (7) And how, in

puzzling contrast, is the undying love of Blacks for their Europeans and

Asian conquerors and enslavers explained?

Yosef Ben-Jochannan

We preached that the so-called major western religions were white folk's religions and offered the historically incorrect but universally accepted blond-haired, blue-eyed representation of Jesus Christ as proof that our enemy had become our deity. We quoted Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who said in his book, The Mis-education of the Negro, that the European destruction of African civilization was done under the guise of "saving souls." And we asked the rhetorical question, must one be dehumanized before one's soul is saved? In retrospect, we had allowed someone else to define our reality.
Yoruba priestess, Iyanla Vanzant says your soul is saved when you accept that the spirit of God lives in you. She specifically says, "When you can look at yourself, accept who and what you are and love yourself unconditionally, your soul is saved. Your spirit is empowered." Dr. Ben's African Origins of the Major "Western Religions" was one of the vehicles I used on my journey through the empowerment of my spirit. "For more than five decades, Dr. Yosef ben-Jochannan, a master teacher, researcher, author, lecturer, has led what has now become a mass effort to emphasize African contributions to the world." African Origins of the Major "Western Religions: first published in 1970, continues to be one of Dr. Ben's most thought-provoking works. "By highlighting the African influences and roots of these religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), Dr. Ben reveals an untold history that many would prefer to forget."

Ben-Jochannan immigrated to the United States in the early 1940s. He worked as a draftsman and continued his studies. He states that in 1945, he was appointed chairman of the African Studies Committee at the headquarters of the newly founded UNESCO, a position from which he reportedly stepped down in 1970. In 1950, Ben-Jochannan began teaching Egyptology at Malcolm King College, and subsequently at City College in New York City. From 1976 to 1987, he was an adjunct professor at Cornell University.[4]
Ben-Jochannan is the author of 49 books, primarily on ancient Nile Valley civilizations and their impact on Western cultures.[2][dead link]In his writings, he argues that the original Jews were from Ethiopia and were Black Africans, while the white Jews later adopted the Jewish faith and its customs.[5]

"Why does the Black man say, 'freedom is doing what I want to do!' and why is it that every thing he 'wants to do' enriches the European?" - Dr. Amos...

When we get into SOCIAL AMNESIA, into forgetting our history, we also FORGET or MISINTERPRET the history and MOTIVES of others as well as our motives. The way to learn of our own creation, how we came to be who and what we are, is getting to know ourselves. It is through getting to know the self INTIMATELY that we get to know the forces that shaped us as a self. Therefore, knowing the self becomes a knowledge of the world. If we don't know ourselves, not only are we a puzzle to ourselves, other people are also a puzzle to us as well. We assume the WRONG IDENTITY and identify ourselves with our enemies. If we don't know WHO WE ARE, then WE ARE WHOMEVER somebody tells US WE ARE! – Dr. Amos Wilson
AMOS WILSON
TEACHES ABOUT THE MENTAL STATE OF BLACK CHILDREN

We must recognize deeply in our hearts, in the very bottom of our psyches, our Afrikanicity. Much of the pathology of Afrikan people today is this vain hope that somehow we will be able to escape our Afrikan heritage, that somehow the white man will become colorblind and will not see us for whom and what we are, that somehow we will be looked upon as some kind of abstraction — as just a man [woman]. Not as an Afrikan man [woman], not as a black man [woman], but as a man [woman], a human being only — without culture, without recognition, without identity. Too many of us want to shed our Afrikanicity for this kind of bogus abstract existence, which is no existence at all, and which is the ultimate acceptance of invisibility. We must recognize that we are an Afrikan people and we will be Afrikan people to the end of time — and we must accept all that goes with that. We must accept the GOOD, the BAD, and all of the POSSIBILITIES that go with being Afrikan. We must accept the fact that this white man is never going to accept us totally, AND GET USED TO THE IDEA! – Dr. Amos Wilson (1985)
